Rosh Hashana Chicken with Cinnamon and Apples

One of the nice things about the responsibility of ordering cookbooks for my library is that I get to search for recipes cookbooks online on company time (it's like an alcoholic as sommelier, only with less will-power).  So I was absolutely thrilled to read in the New York Times that Joan Nathan has a new cookbook coming out in a few months.

For those of you who haven't yet heard of her, Joan Nathan is an award-winning author of 10 cookbooks, as well as a guest contributor to the New York Times (food section, of course).  She has even had her own television series on PBS!

So when it comes to a holiday recipe, I crack open her book or check her website.

Or read her latest article in the NY Times.   The Times article reprinted several New Year's recipes from her new book, including, the obviously named Rosh Hashana chicken with cinnamon and apples.

Apples are traditional for the holiday.  Usually paired with honey, they symbolize a sweet New Year.  However, sugar is used in the recipe instead of honey, probably due to the fact that it is easier to mix with cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples.  But being over-educated, I just happen to know that sugar, like honey, is sweet.  So I'll let it slide.  This once, anyway. ;)

As in a previous post, since the book isn't even for sale for another couple of months, I won't reprint Ms. Nathan's recipe here, but post a link to it instead.

The coming month is like the rush hour of Jewish holidays.  During the next few days, I will post several of my favorite fall-back recipes for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, then follow with traditional recipes for Sukkot.

Stay tuned.

  2. I just finished learning about Ramadan (thanks to the friend of the sarcastic persuasion), so it would balance things out for me to learn about Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur from you! I look forward to this.
